His Word is Truth

Unadulterated Biblical Truth

Ephesians 2:15

There are misunderstandings coming from the area around Ephesians 2:15.

There are claims that this section tells us that the Law was abolished in Messiah's flesh, and that the Law is done away with.

However again, this is not actual what is being said, and this comes from missing the context, bad translations, and also people retelling the verse incorrectly to each other.

Misquoting of scripture is something you have to watch out for, passages are often retold in a twisted form supporting a false doctrine, and you need to look at what is really the subject being spoken of.

Let's take a look at the section from Paul;

2:15 "Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, that is, the law of the commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that he might reconcile them both to Elohim in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity"

Paul's letter here was to the Ephesians, they were gentiles, that is, until they joined YHWH, they became part of Yisrael, then they were no longer considered gentiles, and Paul is speaking of such things in this area.

This is actually important for understanding this passage in context.

What the text actually says was abolished in Messiah's flesh was enmity.
Enmity is hostility between people, it is hatred.

In the text we see the enmity was between Jew and Gentile, and this was put away by the Messiah.

It does not say that the Law of YHWH was abolished.

The Law is not enmity, it is not hatred, but love, and is not the one that brings enmity between Jew and Gentile.

In fact, the Bible teaches us that in order for us to love, we have to keep the entire Law of YHWH!
(You can refer to the page "Love" for more on this matter)

The Messiah told us the entire Law hangs from love YHWH, and love our neighbor, so therefore we must keep the entire Law to love as the Bible teaches us;

Matthew 22:35 "One of them that was a Lawyer asked him a question to test him, Master which is the greatest commandment in the law? Yahushua said unto him, you shall love YHWH your Elohim with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your mind, this is the first and greatest commandment, Second is you shall love your neighbor as yourself, on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets"

The Disciple John also makes this clear;

1 John 5:3 "For this is the love of Elohim, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome"

1 John 5:2 "By this we know that we love the children of Elohim when we love Elohim and keep his commandments"

2 John 1:6 "This is love, that we walk according to His commandments.

Paul in his letter to Timothy;

1 Timothy 1:5 "The purpose of the commandment is love that issues from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith. But some have strayed and have turned aside to vain foolish sayings, desiring to be teachers of the law, not understanding either what they are saying, or the things about which they make confident assertions. But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully"

It was people not obeying the Law of YHWH that had kept and taught enmity against foreigners, they created traditions and commandments of men teaching enmity/hatred, and separation of Jew from Gentile.

In the passage, Paul even mentions a wall dividing the people;

Ephesians 2:12 "That at that time you were without Messiah, being aliens from the commonwealth of Yisrael and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without Elohim in the world. But now in Messiah Yahushua you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Messiah. For he himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in his flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that he might reconcile them both to Elohim in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity"

Interestingly, evidence has revealed to us that the Jews of the day actually set up a literal wall to separate the people, and would not let the Gentiles cross it or else they would be killed!

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia says this concerning that actual wall;

"In the year 1871, while excavations were being made on the site of the temple by the Palestine Exploration Fund, M. Clermont-Ganneau discovered one of the pillars which Josephus describes as having been erected upon the very barrier or middle wall of partition, to which Paul refers.
This pillar is now preserved in the Museum at Constantinople and is inscribed with a Greek inscription in capital or uncial letters, which is translated as follows..
-International Standard Bible Encyclopedia under "Partition, the Middle Wall of Partition."

So there was literally a physical wall of separation that existed, put up by men, so gentiles could not get close to Elohim and the temple.

We should be aware of these matters, and what was really going on at the time, and the issues, and what the scriptures teach us.

The Law does NOT command enmity between Jew and gentile.
These commands that are not of love are among men, and were a part of Pharisee'ism, and still today separation is taught among false teachers such as those in "modern" Christianity, and the Pharisees in "modern" Judaism, and even supposed "Messianic Judaism" teachers, when this is contrary to the truth that we have been given from the Father and his Son Yahushua.

No one can say that they didn't know better, because these groups are claiming to follow the scriptures that condemn such behavior.

The Law of YHWH actually commands for there not to be enmity between us, but love.
Those who do not love the foreigner as themself are sinning against YHWH's Law!
(Look at the state of modern people, and their racism, even from those claiming to be Jews and Christians. Judgment is coming, don't be caught in it with those loving unrighteousness.)

So the joining together of Jews and gentiles is not a new testament only, or a new covenant only, teaching.

It's not new, it's been the truth from the beginning that we're all 1 people to YHWH, all brothers and sisters, children of YHWH, and the Law given to Yisrael taught the same, and the prophets spoke the same.

YHWH has told us to treat all of his people just as if they're the same as us, and as if they're a native of the land.
The false teachers of the world today may tell you opposite to this even in arrogance, but see the truth for yourself from the Bible;

We must not mistreat a foreigner/gentile;
Exodus 22:21 "And you shall not wrong a foreigner or oppress him, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt"

The foreigner/gentile shall be to us as one born among us, and we shall love him as ourselves;
Leviticus 19:34 "But the foreigner that dwells with you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt, I am YHWH your Elohim"

As we are, so shall the foreigner/gentile be before YHWH;

Numbers 15:15 "One ordinance shall be for you of the assembly and for the foreigner who sojourns with you, an ordinance forever throughout your generations. As you are, so shall the foreigner be before YHWH"

Foreigner/gentile shall be as a native of the land;

Exodus 12:48 "If a foreigner shall sojourn with you and would keep the Passover to YHWH, let all his males be circumcised, Then he may come near and keep it, and he shall be as a native of the land, But no uncircumcised person shall eat of it, There shall be one law for the native and for the foreigner who sojourns among you"

Foreigner/gentile shall be to us as one born in the country among the children of Yisrael, they shall have inheritance among the tribes of Yisrael!;

Ezekiel 47:21 "So shall you divide this land to you according to the tribes of Yisrael, And it shall come to pass, that you shall divide it by lot for an inheritance to you, and to the foreigners that sojourn among you, which shall beget children among you, and they shall be to you as born in the country among the children of Yisrael, they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Yisrael, And it shall come to pass, that in what tribe the foreigner sojournes, there shall you give him his inheritance, said Lord YHWH"

YHWH is going to judge those who are doing wrong towards the foreigner/gentile;

Malachi 3:5 "And I will come near to you to judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the foreigner from his right, and do not fear me, says YHWH of hosts"

YHWH made it clear he was not making his covenant only with the people standing before him;
Deuteronomy 29:14 "But you are not the only ones with whom I am making this covenant and oath with, but with whoever is standing here with us today before YHWH our Elohim, and also with whoever is not here with us today"

Literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Yisrael, were not even the only ones who went out of Egypt with YHWH;
Exodus 12:38 "A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds"

Foreigners/gentiles becoming Jews;
Esther 8:17 "And in every province, and in every city, wherever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews fell on them"

YHWH has said do not let the foreigner/gentile who joined himself to YHWH say YHWH has utterly separated them from his people;

Isaiah 56:3 "Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to YHWH say YHWH has utterly separated me from his people"

This is from the same section as the verse above.
YHWH has told us the foreigners/gentiles that join themselves to YHWH, to love the name of YHWH, to be his servants, everyone that keeps the sabbath and takes hold of his covenant,
he will bring even them to his holy mountain and make them joyful in his house of prayer, their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be accepted on his altar, and he tells us his house shall be called a house of prayer for all people/gentiles;

Isaiah 56:6 "Also the sons of the foreigner, that join themselves to YHWH to serve him, and to love the name of YHWH, to be his servants, every one that keeps the sabbath from polluting it, and takes hold of my covenant, Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer, their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people"

The Messiah while at the temple, mentions the above section of scripture, he preached the truth the whole time! The wicked men hated him for it!;

Mark 11:17 "And he was teaching them and saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers. And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching"

He mentioned just facts from the scriptures about YHWH going to gentiles, and the people of his hometown, in the synagogue, people who were synagogue goers(compare to modern congregations goers), became so angry at what he said, they proceeded to try and murder him on the spot!;
Luke 4:16 "And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read, And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.
He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
The Spirit of YHWH is upon me, because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of YHWH’s favor.
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him, And he began to say to them, Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing, And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth, and they said, Is not this Yosef’s son?
And he said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself, What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well, And he said,
Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Yisrael in the days of EliYahu, when the heavens were shut up 3 years and 6 months, and a great famine came over all the land, and EliYahu was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
And there were many lepers in Yisrael in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.
When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, and they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built so that they could throw him down the cliff, But passing through their midst, he went away"

There were men and false teachers in those days who were transgressing these words of truth!
They were sinning by keeping their commandments and traditions of men.
Men such as the Pharisees had rules that separated Jews from Gentiles, but such was sin and going against the Law and Truth of YHWH.
This continues today because people are not following the Bible, but their men who follow traditions rather than Truth!

Come out of the denominations of men!

At Ephesians 2:15, we see this said;
"the law of commandments contained in ordinances"
The word they are translating to ordinances is the Greek word dogmasin(dogma).

Dogma when used in the new testament is usually used to refer to commandments coming from men, not the commandments of YHWH.

Another section where dogma is used in a similar way is at Colossians 2:20.

It is translated to ordinances here as well.

We see Paul plainly mention he is talking about commandments of men, teaching us against them(not teaching us against the Law of YHWH);

Colossians 2:20 "If with Messiah you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to ordinances, do not handle, do not taste, do not touch, which are the things that need to be destroyed, and are the commandments and the teachings of men"

It is impossible for the Law of YHWH to be what is being spoken of at Ephesians 2:15, the Word of YHWH promoted love and joining together of all people.

Beware of the mistranslations of this verse, where some translators actually write in that the Law was abolished in Messiah's flesh, so some people out there are actually reading such a thing, so let's try to be understanding if someone mistakenly thinks this is what the text said.

When we carefully read the verses, we are able to understand that these laws of hatred are not the Law of YHWH, but commandments of men.

There were Laws of the Pharisees against the gentiles, we can witness the enmity in the Bible very clearly, even Peter after the Messiah went to be with YHWH, was in need of correction on how he was behaving towards the gentiles, his culture at the time taught him to behave that way, and he was resisting letting Jews see him behave as a man ought to behave.

Jews were mistreated by gentiles in the past, and men certainly had developed hatred towards gentiles for the abuse and evil foreigner men brought onto Yisraeli, but we must not be mislead, and we must not punish the innocent with the wicked.

Gentiles today as well are doing wrong, they're trying to put back up another wall, despite us learning that the Messiah has destroyed this wall and enmity between gentiles and Jews, and we are all 1 people, 1 in Messiah, all part of Yisrael.
